 As You Grew

As you grew, no matter what happened we looked at the sunny side of life.
As you leave, take with you the wisdom to focus on the 'good' in life!
As you grew, we encouraged you to be open and direct.
As you leave, never lose your honesty with those whom you speak.

Here the parents explain to their child that they have always looked at the positive side of life as she grew and whatever happened with them. So they ask her to use wisdom to focus on the good things in life when she starts her new journey of life without them. They further say that they have always encouraged her to be honest in every matter, so as a grown-up child when she tries to be on her own, she must not lose honesty with those whom she deals with or speaks.

As you grew, we helped you find solutions. As you leave, always remember there is a solution to every problem. 
As you grew, we encouraged individual thought and action. 
As you leave, continue to be independent and persevere when faced with life's challenges.

Here the parents are saying that they have always helped her find solutions as she grew. So she should keep in her mind that there is a solution to every problem when she begins her independent journey without them as they will not be always there to help her. Again the parents say that she must persevere and continue to be independent whenever she faces problems in her life as they have always encouraged her individual thought and action.

Through these lines, the parents say that they have always strengthened the value of family and friends as she grew. So when she begins her independent life without them, she should always make time for her family and friends. The parents further say that everybody should spend some time in laughing, and so should she as they have shared their happy times with her almost everyday

Here the parents say that they have always taught her right values explaining how they are right from wrong since childhood but when she starts her own independent life, she should always adhere to her own values and not be influenced by others' opinions. Again the parents explain that money is not happiness. It shouldn't be one's passion. So when she begins her new life without them, she should not give priority to wealth rather love the simple things in life

As you leave, take with you the thought that each day you are given is a "present"!

At last, the parents say that they have always encouraged her to enjoy each day since her childhood. So when she begins her new journey without them, she should think that each day is a gift from the God.

The over all conclusion is that the poet's have emphasised the ethical values to be given to a child while he/she is being brought up.
