FROM A RAILWAY CARRIAGE
In this poem, the poet describes his first journey by train. Its speed is very amazing. He presents natural scenes that he sees from the window of a railway carriage.
The poet says that the train runs faster than fairies and witches. It rushes forward leaving behind bridges, houses, fences and ditches. The speedy movement the train reminds him of the way the troops of soldiers attack the enemy in a battle. It passes through green fields where the cattle and horses are grazing.
All the scenes of the hill and the plain, which passes so quickly that it seems to him as one drop of rain follows another during heavy rainfall.
Again and again, the train passes by several painted stations with whistle in a very short time.
The poet sees a child climbing a high hill. During his climb, he collects blackberries. He also sees a tramp or homeless person who looks at the train with amazement. He also sees some ladies are making garland using daisy. flowers.
The poet then sees the cart moving slowly in the road with a man and some load. While travelling in the train, he also sees a glimpse of the river and the mill and then disappears for ever as the train runs very fast.
