Ans: Silly rules refer to the rules which force them to leav wee behind his gift at the custom table. That happens because the weight of his gift exceeds the weight limit.

Ans: a) it means he wanted the tree very much.

b) It shows the result why he wanted the tree.

3. Why was the mother dismayed when the father mentioned Christmas?

Ans: When the father mentioned Christmas, the mother was dismayed because she had rather hoped that the boy would forget.


B. Answer these questions.

1. Why do you think would be the job of interplanetary officers?

Ans: The job of interplanetary officers would be to check that the weight of the things should not exceed the limit.

2. Explain the given line in your own words: ‘the hour drifted by in fire and silence and unfelt motion.’

Ans: The boy was angry because he was not sure that he would get his gift. So when the midnight was to approach, the boy asked for the watch and looked at it, waiting eagerly for the Christmas. Hence the rest of the time he remained angry, silent and emotional.

5. Why do you think the boy gasped?

Ans: I think the boy gasped because his wish to look into space through the porthole was fulfilled.

8. Do you think the boy got a better gift in the end? Give reasons.

Ans: I think the boy got a better gift in the end because he got the chance to look into space through the porthole for a long time, and to him the countless stars seemed like the burning of ten billion, billion white and lovely candles.
