Missed Poem Explanation
Missed
The poem is about a game of cricket in which the point misses the catch.
The poem starts with the description of nature. The poet describes the day as clear and bright. The poet says that the gentle air, when it blows, brings the smell of the dry grass. The players are there in their own dresses which are spotless and shining. The poet is not worried about anything rather he is very happy. The ladies who come to see the match are also well dressed. The birds also sing sweetly in the tree tops. Everything remains fine till he misses the catch.
In the second stanza, it is given that the poet's mind gets distracted from the game because of the beautiful summer, the buzzing of the bee, and the thought of his girlfriend Clara who seems to him the most beautiful among all. Just at that moment a definitely possible catch soars in the sky.
In the third stanza, the poet gets confused when he hears the self- satisfied reaction of the bowler who expects a possible catch. He also finds the boys cheering and the batsman already leaving for the pavilion. At last, the moment turns painful when he misses the catch.
It is not possible that he will live to a million years but if he lives he will continue to feel this pain. He then hears the loud yell of the intense joy from the members of the opponent team, which forces him to pull his hair. He feels his heart burning at the thought that he had missed that catch.
The players of his team begin to scoff at him pointing at his error. Thereafter the poet gives up the game of cricket and believes that the game of golf is a better one. After that, whenever he is asked to play cricket he rejects the proposal instantly. Now he thinks that the life is empty of any pleasure or laughter from the day he missed the catch.
