Mr. Nobody
The theme of the poem is that the poet focuses on the incidents that are small generally unimportant mistakes such as breaking of a plate, that a child might get in trouble for.
The poet portrays a family where a little child does mischievous things but the family members do not scold him or rather than blames on Mr Nobody. The family members do not want to scold the child as they love him very much.
Summary of Mr Nobody
The poet says that he knows a funny little man who is as quite as a mouse and he is responsible for every mischief that is done in everybody’s house. Neither the poet nor anyone has seen him, yet we all agree that the plates we break was already cracked by Mr Nobody Here the poet refers to a little child probably of 3 to 5 years old. When such a child breaks any plate he/she never accepts his or her fault and says that he/she doesn’t know who did that.
In the second stranger, the poet again points out some acts of mischief done by Mr Nobody. The poet says that it is Mr nobody who tears our books, leaves the door open, pull the buttons from our shirts; and the door always continues to squeak as it is not oiled by Mr nobody. These acts of mischief are also done by a little child but he or she is never caught, and the blame goes to Mr Nobody.
In the third stanza, the poet again mentions some acts of mischief done by Mr Nobody. The poet says that Mr nobody or the little child puts the damp wood upon the fire, and it prevents the kettle from boiling. His feet brings in mud which makes the carpet of the house dirty. He is also responsible for missing morning newspaper.
The last stanza again points out some mischievous activities of Mr Nobody. The poet says that he is responsible for making finger marks on the door; leaving the curtains of the windows unclosed, which allows the curtains to fade; spilling of ink on the floor; and boots lying on the ground out of place. The poet wants to say that all these mischievous activities are done by little children, but the blame goes to Mr Nobody.
